Friday Second Free Practice - Hungarian GP

Friday August 16th, 2002

World Champion Michael Schumacher and his Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello finished first and second in the Friday afternoon practice session at the Hungaroring as they as they began their challenge to wrap up the Constructors' world title at this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

German Schumacher finished more than half a second faster than Brazilian Barrichello but once again the Italian team were dominant as the newly-crowned champion finished more than eight tenths of a second ahead of their closest rival, the Williams-BMW of Ralf Schumacher.

Both Ferraris hit trouble early on when Barrichello spun across the gravel and Schumacher slid gently sideways but recovered to return to the pits as many of the cars in the field got into difficulty on the dusty track.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen was fourth for McLaren-Mercedes, while Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and Japanese driver Takuma Sato boosted Jordan-Honda's hopes of a good performance when they claimed the fifth and sixth fastest times of the day.

Briton David Coulthard, who picked up a puncture when he lost control of his McLaren-Mercedes early in the session and hit a kerb, finished seventh in the warming conditions at the Hungarian track.

Brazilian Felipe Massa was eighth fastest for Sauber, but left boss Peter Sauber shaking his head when he spun into the barriers late in the session after several previous off-track excursions.

Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa was ninth for Jaguar as his British teammate Eddie Irvine languished in 13th place, while Briton Jenson Button made it back into the top ten for Renault.

British debutant Anthony Davidson produced the surprise of the day, however, when he managed to outpace his more experienced Minardi teammate Mark Webber and pushed the Australian to the bottom of the times by a little less than four hundredths of a second.
