Saturday First Free Practice - Hungarian GP

Saturday August 17th, 2002

World Champion Michael Schumacher once again led a Ferrari one-two, ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello, as the Italian team continued their dominance in the build-up to Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix by finishing almost one second ahead of their closest rivals.

Schumacher sliced two seconds off his time from Friday practice with a lap of 1:14.329 as he closed to within three tenths of his pole position time from the Hungaroring last year.

And the speed of the Ferraris left Minardi drivers Mark Webber and Anthony Davidson in serious danger of failing to qualify on Saturday afternoon as they both finished outside the 107 percent barrier.

Frenchman Olivier Panis was the fastest non-Ferrari on track, with a time of one minute and 16.148 seconds in his BAR Honda which left him more than 1.8 seconds adrift of Schumacher and just less than a second slower than Brazilian Barrichello.

Brazilian Felipe Massa was fourth fastest for Sauber, with Italian Giancarlo Fisichella fifth for Jordan Honda, more than two seconds slower than Schumacher, and Finn Kimi Raikkonen in sixth for McLaren-Mercedes.

Overcast but warming conditions again seemed to suit the Bridgestone runners, with Raikkonen the first Michelin-shod runner in the top ten.

Britons Jenson Button, who crashed at the end of the session but still finished ninth for Renault, and David Coulthard, tenth for McLaren-Mercedes, were the only other Michelin runners in the top ten.

German Nick Heidfeld was behind former team-mate Raikkonen in seventh for Sauber with Canadian Jacques Villeneuve eighth in the second BAR Honda.
