Ferrari showed they should be favourites for victory in this weekend's British Grand Prix by topping the times in the morning warm-up, dominating as clouds over the Silversone circuit promised cool conditions for the afternoon race.
Brazilian Rubens Barrichello once again got the better of his World Champion teammate Michael Schumacher, but such was the dominance of the scarlet cars that even the second Ferrari was nearly 1.5 seconds clear of third-placed Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren.
If the overcast weather continues through the day, the conditions should suit the Italian team's Bridgestone tyres, a fact that was proven with only four Michelin runners in the top ten in the half-hour session.
Jordan's Takuma Sato, who won the International Formula Three Challenge at Silverstone last year, finished fourth, but his hopes of a point's scoring finish remain questionable as he will start from 14th on the grid.
He was two tenths of a second faster than pole man Juan Pablo Montoya, of Williams-BMW, who was more than two seconds off the pace of the leading Ferrari in fifth place.
German Nick Heidfeld was sixth for Sauber, with Canadian Jacques Villeneuve seventh for the resurgent British American Racing team, which is based just 10 miles down the road from Silverstone.
Brazilian Felipe Massa, of Sauber, had another off-track excursion but managed eighth. Scottish McLaren driver David Coulthard and Italian Jarno Trulli, of Renault, completed the list of the top ten runners in a session which saw little incident other than a problem for Arrows, when Heinz-Harald Frentzen stopped out on the track.
