Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and his World Champion teammate Michael Schumacher showed Ferrari are still the team to beat in Formula One when they claimed the first and second fastest times in Friday's opening practice session for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.
Ferrari, who were beaten for the first time in five races at the last Grand Prix, in Monaco, were back on form with Barrichello's leading F2002 finishing just 0.061 seconds ahead of teammate Michael Schumacher at the power-favouring Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Schumacher moved to the top of the times half way though the session and exerted his dominance with a faster lap ten minutes from the end, but was then beaten by Barrichello in the final seconds.
For once, it was not all perfection for Schumacher because he clipped the notorious wall on the outside of the final chicane after his final flying lap and was forced to nurse the dominant F2002 back to the pits.
Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, who has a stunning record of four podiums in six appearances in Montreal, was third for Jordan-Honda, nine tenths of a second slower than Barrichello, with Briton David Coulthard and Finn Kimi Raikkonen fourth and fifth for McLaren-Mercedes.
German Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who spun twice in one minute as he pushed for an improvement later on in the session, claimed the sixth fastest time for Arrows, with Frenchman Olivier Panis seventh for BAR and Brazilian Sauber driver Felipe Massa eighth.
Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya was the first of the Williams-BMW cars, but managed only ninth fastest time in the 20 degree conditions at a sun-soaked circuit, while Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa boosted Jaguar's hopes by completing the top ten.
