Friday First Free Practice - European GP

Friday June 21st, 2002

By Will Gray

Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello turned on the Brazilian style as he mastered the overcast and damp conditions to claim fastest time in Friday's opening practice for the European Grand Prix.

Barrichello, no doubt delighted by his team's World Cup victory over England before practice began, set a best lap of 1:33.665 to lead a Ferrari one-two, with teammate Michael Schumacher 0.103 seconds behind.

German Nick Heidfeld was fourth for Sauber in the drizzle-hit hour-long session which seemed to suit the Bridgestone runners, with Scot Allan McNish, in the Toyota, the first Michelin runner in a surprise fourth. Brazilian Felipe Massa was fifth in the second Sauber, with Briton David Coulthard, of McLaren-Mercedes, fifth quickest.

German Heinz-Harald Frentzen, of Arrows, was seventh, 11 places ahead of his Brazilian teammate Enrique Bernoldi, who spun out into the tyre barrier at turn six half way through the session.

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella was eighth fastest for Jordan, with Finn Mika Salo, in the second Toyota ninth, and Juan Pablo Montoya, in the first of the Williams-BMW cars completing the top ten.

Briton Jenson Button was down in 15th for Renault, three places behind his Italian teammate Jarno Trulli.
