Ralf to Use Melbourne Car in Malaysia

Monday March 11th, 2002

Ralf Schumacher will return to the cockpit of the car in which he suffered his dramatic Albert Park crash for this weekend's Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Schumacher flew through the air at the start of the Australian Grand Prix after hitting the back of Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari, and his car was damaged. But production limitations have forced the team to repair the car for this weekend's race to avoid using an interim chassis from last year.

"If we had the benefit of additional chassis then it may be that Ralf's car would become a spare," said a Williams spokesperson. "But the team does have three chassis, and although the accident looked fairly graphic it was not really a major one.

"If we really had a problem then we could run a 23C (2001 car) chassis or an interim chassis as a spare, but it has not got to that stage."

Much of Schumacher's FW24 machine has been re-built and two of the crushed impact structures were replaced to ensure the car passes scrutineering in Sepang.
