Fit Button Targets Podium Finish in Malaysia

Thursday March 14th, 2002

Briton Jenson Button says he is fitter than ever in his life as he faces a crucial year with the Renault team, and he is aiming to finish on the podium at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Button endured a tough season in 2001, being constantly outperformed by teammate Giancarlo Fisichella, with the Benetton squad.

But the Briton now believes that his coming of age and the momentum and enthusiasm of the new Renault team are perfectly timed to carry him back to the top of the sport after last year's season in the doldrums.

"I learned a lot, but it wasn't great in terms of results," he conceded about last year. "But I really feel things are improving all the while with this team now. We are getting better engines and the car is improving.

"The Michelin tyres are going to be just right this weekend, at least that is my feeling, and I reckon a podium finish is a genuine target."

Button retired from the season opening Australian Grand Prix after being involved in the mayhem at the first corner of the race, but he says he feels ready for this weekend's Malaysian race, despite the intense heat that will engulf the Sepang circuit.

"I feel I've really prepared well for this race," Button said. "I've been doing a lot of fitness work and I feel the fittest and strongest I've ever been in my life. I'm not worried about my fitness - I feel good. But the heat and humidity here is exceptional.

"When I slipped into the car this afternoon just to test the seat and the belts, I was really sweating straightaway. I could feel it running off me. But it's not a bad sign. None of the drivers in this sport are unfit or carrying any flab - except maybe for Eddie (Irvine)."
