Wurz Sets the Pace at Barcelona - Day One

Tuesday October 1st, 2002

McLaren's test driver Alexander Wurz topped the timesheets on the first day of testing at the Barcelona circuit, where three Formula One teams got back to action to prepare the Japanese Grand Prix, the last race of the 2002 season.

Just two days after the United States Grand Prix, the test drivers began a three-day test at the Spanish track, and Austrian Wurz again showed his knowledge of the Circuit de Catalunya today, finishing the session nearly 1.5 seconds faster than Briton Anthony Davidson.

The British American Racing driver completed 71 laps at the wheel of the Honda-powered car, and his day was trouble-free until the final moments of the session, when the Japanese power unit let go. Davidson finished ahead of compatriot Darren Turner, who was again testing for the McLaren team.

Toyota test drivers Stephane Sarrazin and Ryan Briscoe finished at the bottom of the times as the Japanese squad began their preparations for their home Grand Prix at Suzuka.

"I am very happy with the work we have done today," said Sarrazin. "Our objective was to continue to put more mileage under our belt with the TF102B and to try various aerodynamic elements.

"We went through our programme without any problems and the car felt good to drive. This is a promising start to our three-day test and we will continue working in the same direction tomorrow."

Testing at Barcelona will resume tomorrow, when the Williams team are expected to join.
