Sunday Warm Up - Belgian GP

Sunday September 1st, 2002

World Champion Michael Schumacher and Finnish youngster Kimi Raikkonen continued their mastery of the tricky Spa-Francorchamps circuit, when they finished first and second in the Sunday warm-up for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Pole sitter Schumacher scorched to a time of 1:48.044 in his Ferrari as he enjoyed the rare clear skies and sunshine at his favourite track on the calendar.

But McLaren-Mercedes star Raikkonen, who will start alongside Schumacher on the front row of the grid, showed the five-time World Champion he is determined to chase him hard for victory by getting within half a second of his rival's time.

Schumacher displayed his dominance, however, with a late lap that stretched him 0.989 seconds clear of Raikkonen, leaving clear signals that he plans to drive into the distance in Sunday afternoon's race.

Scot David Coulthard finished third, within one hundredth of a second of his McLaren-Mercedes teammate, with Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa fourth for Jaguar as the rejuvenated team continued to show impressive pace.

Rubens Barrichello, who will start behind his Ferrari teammate Schumacher in third, finished 1.359 seconds slower than the German in fifth, just ahead of Italian Renault driver Jarno Trulli.

Frenchman Olivier Panis and Canadian Jacques Villeneuve were seventh and ninth respectively for British American Racing Honda, with Ralf Schumacher eighth for Williams-BMW and Nick Heidfeld completing the top ten in his Sauber.

Jordan's Takuma Sato finished last of the runners after failing to set a competitive time before spinning off around the Stavelot corner and damaging his car when he hit the tyre barriers.
