Friday Second Free Practice - Italian GP

Friday September 13th, 2002

Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello gave their faithful Tifosi reason to smile in the dull conditions that greeted the start of the Italian Grand Prix weekend when they clocked up another one-two in Friday's second practice session at Monza.

The dominant scarlet cars were once again the class of the field and while the sun failed to shine on the Italian circuit, German Schumacher and Brazilian Barrichello glowed red hot as they scorched to first and second fastest times respectively.

Schumacher set a best lap of 1:22.433, improving by four tenths on his earlier effort and closing to within two tenths of a second of Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya's pole position time of 2001.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen was the best of the rest, putting his McLaren-Mercedes in third position five tenths of a second off the pace, while his struggling teammate David Coulthard ended a troubled day in 16th after spinning off into the tyres at the Curva del Serraglio five minutes into the session.

Briton Eddie Irvine boosted his hopes of a successful weekend and continued Jaguar's impressive early form at the high-speed circuit by finishing in fourth place, ahead of Montoya's Williams-BMW in fifth and Finn Mika Salo's Toyota in sixth.

German Ralf Schumacher was seventh in the second Williams-BMW, as the Grove-based team showed better than normal Friday form, while Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa was eighth and the Renault pair of Italian Jarno Trulli and Briton Jenson Button completed the top ten.

Alex Yoong, returning to the Minardi cockpit after a two-race break, finished last of the 20 runners once again after being forced to park his Minardi at the track mid way though the session. But he was just two tenths of a second slower than his teammate Mark Webber and within four seconds of Schumacher's time.
