Sunday Warm Up - Italian GP

Sunday September 15th, 2002

Williams-BMW and Ferrari dominated Sunday morning's warm-up for the Italian Grand Prix, but it was the 'number twos' of Ralf Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello who claimed the fastest times.

The pair will start the Monza race behind front row pairing Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya and World Champion Michael Schumacher, but the two pairings ended up in opposite positions in the pre-race practice.

German Ralf Schumacher claimed the top spot for Williams-BMW with a time of 1:24.480 - already faster than his lap record from last year - while Barrichello was just 0.156 seconds behind.

Pole man Montoya finished third in his Williams-BMW, a further 0.102 seconds back, with Schumacher four tenths of a second slower than his front-row partner in his Ferrari.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen, who will start from sixth spot after being demoted from fifth following his collision with Jordan's Takuma Sato in qualifying, was fifth fastest for McLaren-Mercedes, just two tenths behind Schumacher.

Sato went off track again when he made a small mistake at the Parabolica and Barrichello also had a brief run across the gravel at the Curva del Vialone after out-braking himself.

Jacques Villeneuve's BAR Honda came to a halt at the end of the pitlane and he was forced to push it back past the exit line before his mechanics could take it the rest of the way.

Frenchman Olivier Panis, of BAR Honda, and Brazilian Felipe Massa, of Sauber, were sixth and seventh fastest with Briton David Coulthard eighth for McLaren, Mika Salo ninth in his Toyota and the second Sauber of Nick Heidfeld tenth.
