FIA: Schumacher Did Not Overtake Under Yellow

Sunday September 28th, 2003

By David Cameron

Michael Schumacher did not overtake under a yellow flag and was therefore not under investigation, the FIA told Atlas F1 after the United States Grand Prix.

Ferrari driver Schumacher overtook Toyota's Olivier Panis on the straight at the same time that the car of Rubens Barrichello was being removed from the gravel trap at the first corner.

The FIA said, however, that Schumacher was not in the yellow flag zone when he passed Panis.

"There is no penalty for overtaking when you see a yellow flag, only when you're by a yellow flag", FIA observer Herbie Blash explained. "Michael was not in the yellow flag zone when he overtook Olivier - he overtook well before the yellow flag area.

"We discussed the matter at length, and there was no penalty."

McLaren team chief Ron Dennis went to see the race director on the matter and received the same response.

Schumacher went on to win the race and is now only one point away from a record sixth title.
