Morbidelli Tipped for Minardi Drive

Thursday February 8th, 2001

According to reports in the Italian press, former Formula One driver Gianni Morbidelli is the hot favourite to drive for the European Minardi team alongside Fernando Alonso next season.

Following the announcement yesterday that 19-year old Alonso will be the first driver of the Faenza-based team, his teammate is expected to be announced next week, and 33-year old Morbidelli is now seen as the favourite to fill the spot.

Italian Morbidelli made his Formula One debut back in 1990 with the Dallara-Ford team, and he already raced for Minardi in 1991 and 1992.

His last race in Formula One was the 1997 Japanese Grand Prix, driving for the Sauber team. After 67 Grand Prix and 8.5 points, Morbidelli left Formula One.

The Italian raced in the European Super Touring Cup Championship last season with a BMW, finishing in third position.
