Ecclestone Against EM.TV-Kirch Deal

Friday February 9th, 2001

According A report in the Wall Street Journal newspaper, Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is currently trying to block the sale of a 24,5 per cent of EM.TV's shares of his SLEC company, owner of the commercial rights of the sport.

The German company bought a 50 per cent stake of SLEC family holding in March 2000, and is now trying to sell part of that stake to media giant Kirch, but according to the report, Ecclestone contacted EM.TV's chairman Thomas Haffa in order to dissuade him from selling.

It is thought that, though Ecclestone can not legally stop the sale, he owns an option he could use to force EM.TV to buy another 25 per cent of the SLEC stake, something that the troubled German company would probalby find impossible to do at the moment.
