Jordan Discovers Whole New Set of Relations

Thursday July 12th, 2001

By Alan Baldwin

Eddie Jordan suddenly discovers he has more relations than he ever imagined while David Coulthard is simply happy to escape the German Formula One fans. The team owner and Championship challenger have given very different insights into the British Grand Prix at a news conference.

"I hate it and I love it," said Jordan, the Irish entrepreneur who started his team in 1990 from a lock-up garage inside Silverstone circuit and whose factory is over the road from the front entrance. "I hate it because I seem to have more relations than I ever knew I had before and they all want tickets for this goddam place, so it's a continuous no, non-stop.

"And the phone calls, the closer we get to Silverstone, they increase and they increase. That is a measure of where the team is and that is very heartening too to know that you have a lot of fans and a lot of Irish chancers chancing around looking for a ticket. They still come anyway as indeed I did about 40 years ago," added the Irishman.

McLaren's Coulthard, who has won at Silverstone for the past two seasons and hopes to become the first driver to win three British Grands Prix in a row since his late compatriot Jim Clark, had a different take.

"Obviously I don't have as many friends as Eddie so I don't get those calls," he said.

More Enjoyable

"It doesn't really make a difference in terms of me functioning during a Grand Prix weekend it just makes it more enjoyable," the Scot said of his home race. "It's more enjoyable to be at home and the atmosphere is more relaxed in many ways," added Coulthard, who stays at the circuit in his own luxury motorhome as does Canadian Jacques Villeneuve.

"I'm in the campsite and if you've been near a campsite full of Germans then you'll know how nice it is to be near the reserved British. They tend to stop partying at a civilised hour where I'm sure there's some kind of Olympic award for how late the Germans can be doing their bangers and fireworks and whatever it is they do.

"Sorry Germany," he added with a smile.

He will be hoping that the Germans, with triple World Champion Michael Schumacher chasing a record-equalling 51st win on Sunday to stretch his already comfortable 31 point lead, will not be celebrating on Sunday. With just six races remaining after Silverstone and the next Grand Prix on Schumacher's home territory at Hockenheim, Coulthard needs to delight his home fans.

"You don't know what to expect this weekend," he said. "It depends on the weather, that could be a big issue. That could determine whether the Williams is competitive as well."
