Schumacher Again on the Football Field

Tuesday July 24th, 2001

Michael Schumacher will take to the football field once again tomorrow, and will take on another Schumacher in the shape of former German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher.

Ferrari's Schumacher is said to be in fine shape after a break from testing following his massive crash at Monza last week, and he will join a number of stars from sport and screen in a UNESCO charity football game in Mannheim. The match, which will kick-off in the Carl Benz stadium at 7pm local time, is expected to draw a 35,000 sell-out crowd having already pre-sold around 10,000 tickets.

The triple World Champion had a second check up last Wednesday and the match will be good fitness preparation for this weekend's German Grand Prix. He is expected to be joined by Formula One football-playing regulars Giancarlo Fisichella of Benetton, Jarno Trulli of Jordan, Olivier Panis of British American Racing, and Jos Verstappen of Arrows.

However, Michael's brother Ralf will not make it a Schumacher hat-trick as he is not a keen football player and could not compete with his brother's skills.
