Minardi Sign Scheckter for F3000 Drive

Thursday July 26th, 2001

South African Tomas Scheckter, sacked as a test driver by the Jaguar Formula One team this year, has been drafted in by Minardi to race in the F3000 championship.

Scheckter, 20-year-old son of 1979 World Champion Jody, lost what he hoped would be a springboard to Formula One after a court appearance in England for 'kerb crawling' - propositioning prostitutes from a car.

Minardi, whose Formula One team are also owned by Australian businessman Paul Stoddart, said Scheckter would replace David Saelens for the German race on Saturday after the Belgian was injured at Silverstone.

Scheckter, who competed in British Formula Three last year as well as a limited number of Formula 3000 races, is currently leading the Formula Nissan series in Spain.
