Herbert Flies in Rockingham Test

Tuesday July 31st, 2001

Briton Johnny Herbert at last got his first taste of a Champ Car on Tuesday as he successfully completed a test for the Dale Coyne Racing team at the Rockingham Speedway in England.

Herbert, 37, tested alongside Champ Car driver Alex Barron and went quicker than his rival as he reached speeds close to 200mph (320km/h) at the Northamptonshire oval track.

It was an impressive performance from the experienced Herbert, who up until Tuesday had not raced around an oval circuit. Herbert, who raced in Formula One for 12 seasons, is now expected to look for a Champ Car deal or a drive in the rival Indy Racing League for next year.

He has also prioritised the prestigious Indianapolis 500 race as something he wants to compete in for 2002.
