Schumacher Heads List of Athletes' Earnings

Friday March 2nd, 2001

Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher was the highest paid athlete in the year 2000 with $59 million in earnings, according to Forbes Magazine.

The German driver, who last season ended a 21-year wait for the Ferrari team by clinching his third drivers' title, headed world number one golfer American Tiger Woods, who earned $6 million less than Schumacher.

Woods was followed in third place by boxer Mike Tyson who earned $48 million and former basketball star Michael Jordan with $38 million.

Seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, who was tragically killed during the Daytona 500 two weeks ago, was the second driver on the list, in sixth position, with $24.5 million.

Tennis star Martina Hingis was the first woman, in 22nd position, with $11 million.
