Schumacher to Play Charity Match

Thursday March 22nd, 2001

Ferrari star Michael Schumacher has agreed to play in a charity football match despite the fact that the biggest draw will no longer turn up.

A spokesperson for the driver said on Wednesday that Schumacher could decide not to play following the withdrawal of Brazilian football stars, but the German has now decided to play anyway.

Double world cup winner Pele was expected to play, but has pulled out at the last minute. However, Schumacher believes the players appearing will still create an impressive spectacle.

The likes of Zico and Junior will run out alongside Schumacher and the match, which will be played at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro next Wednesday, could also see an appearance from former FIFA player of the year Romario.

Schumacher is a UNICEF ambassador and the match will see children helped by the charity also making an appearance.

The Ferrari star is expected to be joined on the field by his Brazilian team-mate Rubens Barrichello four days before the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.
