Schumacher Ends Saturday Karting in 8th

Saturday October 27th, 2001

Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher ended Saturday's Karting World Championship event at Kerpen 8th overall, after the German started the last qualifying heat of the day from 22nd.

Schumacher finished 9.5 seconds behind heat winner, World Championship leader Vitiantonio Liuzzi. Briton Lewis Hamilton finished second. Schumacher was fastest previously in practice, however his qualifying heat took place in wet conditions, which meant times set in the second, dry heat were faster.

The karting event, held at Schumacher's childhood home town, is held in various heats throughout the weekend, before the final race takes place tomorrow afternoon. Schumacher will still have a chance to improve his position in tomorrow's warm-up practice and final heat.
