Schumacher Crashes Out of First Kart Race

Sunday October 28th, 2001

Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher retired from the first of two races in today's World Karting Championship event at Kerpen.

The German was running as high as third, when he spun out on lap 15 of 23, his engine shutting down permanently. He ended up classified as 25th.

The race was won by Italian Sauro Cesetti, while Karting Championship leader Vitantonio Liuzzi finished fourth and Briton Lewis Hamilton 7th.

Schumacher will have a chance to improve on his result, when he takes part later today in the second and final race of the event.
