Sauber in 'Good Contact' with Volkswagen

Wednesday January 29th, 2003

Sauber in 'Good Contact' with VolkswagenTeam boss Peter Sauber has told German motoring giant Volkswagen that they would be welcomed into his team if they want to join Formula One.

Volkswagen have said that they have no plans to enter the sport in a partnership with a team, but the owner of the Swiss-based Sauber team has sent an open message to the car manufacturer.

"I would like to let VW chairman Wolfgang Pischetsrieder know that if they join F1 racing it would be nice to be part of their plan," Sauber told German newspaper Die Welt. "We have not been negotiating in detail but we certainly are in good contact.

"It would be a great option. It is always useful to have the backing of a car giant. The continuously high costs in the sport basically demand such co-operations."
