Michael Schumacher had a small problem at the start of the long run test on the Monza (Italy) circuit. He overheated his clutch. Schumacher did 63 laps after it was repaired. The German used the 046/2 engine which resulted in a time faster than Damon Hill's pole of last year with a 1m 24.134s.

Eddie Irvine tried four different types of Goodyear tyres with the F310B with the 046/1 engine in the back. He drove 65 laps with a best time of 1m 24.598s.

Irvine commented: "I am pleased with the result of testing. The work of the last few days was aimed more at the future than at the next race as the Monza track is completely different to Interlagos."

Irvine added: "The car seems much better than last year, and it seems even better here at Monza than it did in Australia."

"We will be in better condition than we were last year in Brazil, which was a disastrous trip. It's going to be a difficult track at Interlagos next week, with a mixture of fast and slow bends, and a bumpy surface - it'll be hard to find the right balance for the car. But I feel confident and I'm aiming for the podium," Schumacher said.
