This was first day of testing of Scuderia Ferrari-Marlboro at the Jerez circuit, in the Southern Spain. Both Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine were testing today, with Schumacher back at work after taking several days off to heal a twisted ankle. However, his first outing since the Australian Grand Prix was a short one; Schumacher's first run was cut short after about 50 meters, due to an electrical problem which the team quickly solved.

After going 55 laps a problem again surfaced, causing the German to end his day's testing agenda. The cause of the problem is said to be dealing with the gearbox. Schumacher was, however, able to set the fastest time of the day with a 1:26.201 secs. Team mate Eddie Irvine did a total of 94 laps, the Ulsterman's best lap 0.162 secs slower than Schumacher's. Both Irvine and Schumacher will continue testing tomorrow.
