McLaren team boss Ron Dennis claimed on Friday that his team have performed to the best of their ability all season, but admitted that Ferrari deserve their double world title success as the Woking-based outfit were not good enough.
Despite being outgunned by Ferrari throughout the year, Dennis branded McLaren's performance this season as "competent" but vowed that things will be better next year.
"The reality is that, as was obvious, there wasn't any time this year where we didn't do a competent job," Dennis said. "We had reliable cars and the right race strategy most of the time, but overall we just weren't good enough and that is the same for anyone who doesn't win.
"The most important thing is to systematically analyse the reasons why and make sure it doesn't happen again. Formula One is the pinnacle, it is difficult to win a race and even more difficult to win a Championship."
Ferrari have scored seven wins so far in 2001, while McLaren have won only three races.
