McLaren Release Tape of Dennis-Bernoldi Talk

Monday June 11th, 2001

The McLaren team gave some members of the press at Canada a tape they claimed to have been recorded during the conversation between team chief Ron Dennis, Mercedes sporting director Norbert Haug, and Arrows driver Enrique Bernoldi, after the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago.

Bernoldi, who was driving ahead of McLaren's David Coulthard for more than 40 laps during that race, claimed Dennis and Haug had made threats towards him, telling him he will have no future in Formula One if he continues to drive this way.

However, McLaren have now released a tape of the talk between the Arrows driver and the McLaren team chiefs, which supports Dennis's claim that no threat was made.

According to those who heard the tape, Dennis himself only talked to Bernoldi briefly, and had told him, "that was not sporting and you shouldn't carry on like that."

A transcript of the tape is expected to be published in the British media in the next few days.
