 Gene Criticises Testing Ban Tuesday October 23rd, 2001 Spaniard Marc Gene has criticised the FIA's decision to ban Formula One testing during November and December this year. The new regulation imposed by the sport's governing body forbids the teams to test from the end of the season until the start of next year, a rule which will not come into play at the end of the 2002 season. Williams test driver Gene believes the Formula One teams will have to test nearly every day once the testing ban comes to an end in New Year's day in order to get ready for the season opening Australian Grand Prix in March. "The new testing rules are nonsense because it will force us to work almost every day in January and February," Gene told Spanish news agency Efe. "Next year that rule will change because two and a half months are not enough to get ready for the season." The Spaniard, who decided to stay with the Williams team as test driver for one more year, also admitted he was surprised to see his team doing so well in 2001. "This year has been better than we expected, because our main goal was to be third in the Constructors' Championship," he added. "We didn't expect to win four races, score four pole positions, or get six fastest laps."
