Hakkinen Crashes Out of the Australian GP

Sunday March 4th, 2001

McLaren's former world champion Mika Hakkinen crashed out of Sunday's Australian Formula One Grand Prix while running in second place.

The Finn slammed into the tyre barrier on his 26th lap, after skidding off the track at speed following what looked like a right front suspension failure.

Hakkinen was taken to the medical centre for a quick check-up, but was released and declared fine.

It was the second year in a row that Hakkinen had failed to finish in the season-opening race.
