Minardi Deny Morbidelli Move

Monday June 4th, 2001

The Minardi team have denied veteran Italian Gianni Morbidelli will replace Brazilian Tarso Marques for the remainder of the season.

Morbidelli, one of the main candidates to fill the second seat alongside Spaniard Fernando Alonso before the start of the season, was rumoured to be in line to replace Marques following a disappointing start of the season, where he has been clearly outpaced by his younger teammate.

However, team owner Paul Stoddart has denied the rumours, also confirming Morbidelli was indeed one of the favourites before the season began.

"He (Morbidelli) is not a replacement for this year," said Stoddart. "He was probably the other driver that might have made the second seat. We've made our choice. It's Tarso as we thought that he represented a better influence for Fernando."
