Burglars Strike as Record Crowd Watches Race

Tuesday June 12th, 2001

A German couple was watching a Formula One motor racing duel between Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf on television so intently that they didn't hear burglars who broke into their house at the same time.

Like 16 million other Germans who were following the Sunday race on television, Peter W. and Hannelore T. in the Berlin suburb of Mahlow told Bild newspaper on Tuesday they were concentrating on the nerve-tingling race.

"We didn't hear a thing," Peter said. The thieves broke in through a first storey window while the couple watched television downstairs. They opened all the drawers and closets before making off with 10,000 marks ($4,500) worth of jewellery.

The couple noticed the burglary several hours later.

The race in Montreal gave top-rated German network RTL the second highest ratings quota in its history - 46.0 percent. Some 16.18 million viewers watched the race, which was won by Germany's Ralf Schumacher ahead of his brother Michael in second place.
