Zanardi Back Behind the Wheel

Thursday November 8th, 2001

Former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi got behind the wheel of a car for the first time since he lost both legs in a dramatic CART accident in Germany back in September.

34-year old Zanardi was kept in a coma and remained in critical condition for days after the accident at the Lausitzring track on September 15 and left the hospital at the end of October.

Only a week after being released from the hospital, the Italian drove from Monte Carlo to Italy in a special car with hand controls, supervised by his doctor Claudio Costa.

"I found the situation very satisfactory," said Costa. "He always had a sad looking face, but I see the light in his eyes. He will be an example for everybody."

Zanardi, a former Williams and Jordan driver and two-time CART champion, said after being released from hospital that he did not rule out a return to racing in the future.
