'Undriveable' Benetton for Fisichella

Saturday March 3rd, 2001

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella ended 17th on the Albert Park grid and branded Benetton's B201 "undriveable" after he disappointed in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.

Fisichella struggled with the handling of the spare car and aborted two runs after a water leak had forced him to switch from his original B201.

"It was really strange to drive," said Fisichella. "I don't know what the problem was but it was pretty much undriveable so I had to abort my final two runs."

Briton Jenson Button had little to smile about, and although he beat team-mate Fisichella he could only manage 16th on the grid and admitted he needs more track time with his new team.

"I haven't had much track time and therefore haven't got much work done on new tyres," he said after qualifying. "Sixteenth position considering all this, and our expectations, is quite respectable."

Technical director Mike Gascoyne, who played down the team's chances during the pre-season, added: "Overall we are more or less where we expected to be. Our next milestone will be to make the car reliable for the race."
