Diniz Launches Brazilian Formula Renault

Tuesday November 20th, 2001

Former Grand Prix racer and Prost shareholder Pedro Diniz has started up a Formula Renault championship in his native Brazil.

Diniz, who drove for Forti, Arrows, Ligier, and Sauber in his Formula One racing career, has helped create the series to mirror its European championships and he aims to help young Brazilian drivers with their future careers.

"Brazil needed a category like this, which is modern at the same time as being affordable," said Diniz. "We have to bear in mind our reality. It is not easy for a driver to go to Europe these days. The parity between the Real and the dollar is no longer the same as it used to be some years ago."

The championship will feature 10 races all over Brazil and will take place in circuits like Interlagos and Jacarepagua.
